During my ultramarathon training, I learned that we have a certain capacity for willpower. While this capacity can expand, during the building process, it has to come from somewhere else. There were many times I felt unmotivated outside of training because the training was pulling that willpower from other aspects of life such as work, social and creative. This taught me how crucial it is to manage our energy wisely and be intentional about where we direct our focus, especially when we’re committing to new challenges.

Book: Status and Culture: How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change by W. David Marx. This book dives into how our quest for social rank shapes everything from our tastes to our identities. It’s a fascinating exploration of the forces driving change in art, fashion, and culture.
"Our tastes are not simply personal preferences but are deeply influenced by the status systems we navigate every day."

Most recently on the podcast, I had a conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jonathan Kaufman, where we explored how media and journalism is changing. Jonathan shared his view that the role of journalism is to help people see the world through other people’s perspective which is more important than ever as we get more and more news from algorithms and echo-chambers.
If you're interested in the intersection of media, history, and the future of journalism, I highly recommend this one.
